The Story Behind “Neko Girl” — by Kira Katdoll

I wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes story about Neko Girl, because this song means a lot to me and there are so many tiny details hidden in it that people may not notice at first.

So… let’s start from the beginning.

Neko Girl is a song about a girl who likes dressing up as a cat — or maybe even being one. It mixes innocence with a little bit of spice. And yes… it was definitely inspired by me.

Besides being a doll, I’ve always felt like I’m also a kitten somehow. That’s actually where my name Katdoll came from: cat + doll. When I wrote this song, I was thinking a lot about my feline side. I’ve always loved cats, cat ears, cute cat aesthetics, and everything related to that world. Since this is the beginning of my story as an artist, I wanted this side of me to be present from the start.

This was also the very first song I ever recorded.

The producer behind the song was Lucaz Ferraz, who helped me bring Neko Girl to life, and I’m really grateful for everything he did. He absolutely nailed the sound.

One fun fact about the track: the cat meows in the background are actually… me.

We couldn’t find kitten meows in the exact tone I wanted, so Lucaz had the idea of recording them with my own voice and editing them slightly. So yes — those little cat sounds you hear in the song are literally me meowing.

Making the Music Video

I’ve studied cinema and costume design, and I’ve always been passionate about creating and editing videos. Because of that, I challenged myself to create this entire music video almost completely independently.

My fiancé helped me, but I handled most of the process myself: pre-production, production, filming, post-editing, and all the tiny details.

Every single set in the video was created inside my home.

One thing people don’t always realize is how organized I am when it comes to my creative projects. Before filming, I made an entire project guide for the music video, including mood boards for each character, scenario ideas, scripts, framing guides, and even outfit sketches.

Yes, I really plan everything.

The Four Cat Girls

The video actually features four different cat girls, and I even gave each one a name and personality.

Sexy Cat

Sexy Cat is kind of the main character. She wears pink and exists in a fictional cat world where she’s an adult content creator and the cover star of Playcat Magazine.

And yes — I created that magazine myself.

I literally designed it from scratch, wrote content for it, included fake interviews, photos, and little world-building details. I wanted everything to feel real, even if people only saw it for a few seconds.

Gamer Cat

The second character is Gamer Cat.

As the name suggests, she’s obsessed with games. The game she plays was inspired by games I loved in the 2000s. At first, she’s sad because she loses, but throughout the video she keeps trying again until she finally wins.

What’s funny is that the game shown on the screen?

I made that too.

I created fake gameplay, menu screens, winning screens, losing screens — basically an entire little game universe just for the video.

Psycho Cat

Then there’s Psycho Cat.

She was inspired by anime characters I love and has this chaotic, slightly creepy “crazy kitty” energy. In the video, she appears after hunting mice and is covered in blood while laughing and acting completely unhinged.

I wanted her to feel sinister, weird, and almost unsettling — but still fun in a dark way.

Meme Cat

And finally, there’s Meme Cat.

She got her name because she wears a cat meme shirt. But she’s more than just comic relief — she secretly has a crush on Sexy Cat.

She owns a Playcat Magazine, admires Sexy Cat from afar, and at the end of the video she even draws a heart on her picture.

I thought it was a cute little detail.

How Long Did Everything Take?

I basically spent one full day recording each character, which means filming took around four days in total.

Editing took about a day and a half — but honestly, pre-production took way longer. Planning, designing characters, creating props, and building the whole concept definitely took the most time.

This project was a lot of work, but it also felt really special because I poured so much of myself into it.

Neko Girl wasn’t just my first song — it was the beginning of my world.

Now I want you to see it for yourself.
